Akal Daad, also known as third molar or wisdom teeth. It typically erupts in late adolescence or early adulthood. Due to limited space in the jaw, these teeth can cause various issues as they try to emerge or become impacted.
Pericoronitis is a dental condition that affects wisdom teeth. It occurs when the gum tissue surrounding a partially erupted or impacted tooth becomes inflamed and infected.
This condition can cause discomfort, pain, and swelling, requiring prompt attention and treatment.

In this blog post, we will explore the causes, symptoms, and treatment options, providing valuable insights for those experiencing this condition.
Causes of Pericoronitis
Pericoronitis typically arises due to the partial eruption of wisdom teeth.
When these teeth do not fully emerge, a flap of gum tissue can form over them, creating a pocket where food particles, bacteria, and debris can accumulate.

This trapped debris provides an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive, leading to inflammation and infection of the surrounding gum tissue.
Symptoms of Pericoronitis
Individuals with Akal Daad infection, may experience several noticeable symptoms, including:
Pain and tenderness in the affected area.
Swelling and redness of the gum tissue around the wisdom tooth.
Difficulty opening the mouth or swallowing.
Foul taste or bad breath due to the accumulation of bacteria.
Discharge of pus or fluid from the affected area.
Presence of Swollen lymph nodes in the neck or jaw area.
Treatment Options for Pericoronitis (Wisdom Teeth)
a. Antibiotics
In cases of mild to moderate pericoronitis, dentists may prescribe antibiotics to help control the infection and reduce inflammation. It is important to complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed by the dentist.
b. Warm Saltwater Rinse
Rinsing the mouth with warm salt water can help alleviate discomfort and reduce inflammation.
Mix one spoonful of salt in half a glass of hot (bearable) water. Place it in the mouth, bend the head to the affected side, and swish the water mainly focusing on the affected side. Do it 10 times at once. And continue 4-5 times a day.
c. Pain Management
Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as Diclofenac, Aceclofenac, ketorolac, and ibuprofen, can help manage pain and reduce inflammation. However, it is advisable to consult with a dentist before taking any medication.
d. Dental Cleaning
Professional cleaning of the affected area may be necessary to remove debris and bacteria that cannot be reached through regular oral hygiene practices.
e. Wisdom Tooth Extraction
In cases of recurrent or severe wisdom teeth infection, extraction of the wisdom tooth may be recommended. This helps eliminate the underlying cause of the condition, preventing future episodes of pericoronitis.
f. Operculectomy

The operculum is a flap of gum tissue that partially covers an erupting tooth, commonly the wisdom tooth.
The operculum can trap food particles and bacteria, leading to the development of pericoronitis, a condition characterized by inflammation and infection around the partially erupted tooth.
During the operculectomy procedure, the dentist or oral surgeon will administer local anesthesia to numb the area. They will then carefully remove or trim the excess gum tissue covering the tooth. This allows for better access for cleaning and reduces the risk of bacterial buildup.
g. Cuspal reduction

When a partially erupted wisdom tooth is impacted or positioned in a way that it comes into contact with the opposing tooth's cusp tip during biting or chewing, it can create constant pressure and inflammation in the surrounding gum tissue. This can contribute to the development of pericoronitis or exacerbate existing symptoms.
To alleviate this issue, the dentist may recommend trimming or reducing the cusp tip of the opposing tooth.
This procedure aims to create a more harmonious occlusion (bite) and eliminate the source of trauma or irritation to the affected area.
By reducing the height or reshaping the cusp tip, the contact and pressure on the inflamed gum tissue can be minimized, allowing for better healing and preventing further complications.
Prevention Tips
To reduce the risk of developing Pericoronitis, it is advisable to:
Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing at least twice a day especially brushing at the back of the tooth and flossing regularly. ( If not able to reach the back of your teeth with the tooth brush you are using then switch to the baby toothbrush and brush immediately after eating anything, also slightly close your mouth while brushing).
Rinse your mouth with an antimicrobial mouthwash (Chlorohexidine, hydrogen peroxide 3%, betadine, and salt-water rinses) to help control bacterial growth.
Visit the dentist regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings.
Consider having impacted or problematic wisdom teeth removed before they cause complications.

Pericoronitis, is a common condition associated with wisdom teeth. By understanding the causes, recognizing the symptoms, and seeking timely treatment, individuals can effectively manage this condition.
If you are experiencing symptoms of, it is recommended to consult with a dentist who can provide an accurate diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment options tailored to your specific situation.
