The root canal procedure involves the removal of the infected or damaged pulp from the tooth's root canals and the subsequent cleaning and shaping of the canals to prepare them for the filling material.

Procedure in root canal procedure:

Once the dentist has gained access to the pulp chamber through the small access hole created, the dentist will use a combination of manual and rotary filing techniques to clean and shape the canals.

During the cleaning and shaping process, the dentist aims to create a smooth and tapered shape within the canals. Then comes the super important step i.e. Irrigation and activation.

The dentist uses irrigation solutions to flush out the canals and remove any remaining pulp remnants. After the canals are cleaned, shaped, and irrigation, they are ready for the filling material.
By thoroughly cleaning and shaping the canals and filling them with gutta-percha, the dentist helps eliminate infection and creates a sealed environment that promotes healing and prevents reinfection. This step is important for the long-term success of the root canal.

Irrigation is a super important and essential step during the root canal procedure that involves the use of irrigation solutions to clean and disinfect the root canals. It helps remove debris, bacteria, and any remaining infected tissue from the canals, promoting a more successful long-term outcome. This step is usually missed by most dentists.

Irrigation in the root canal procedure:

1. Purpose of Irrigation

The primary purpose of irrigation is to eliminate bacteria, toxins, and debris from the root canals. Even after the initial cleaning with files, some microorganisms or infected tissue may remain. Irrigation solutions act as antimicrobial agents and help flush out these remnants, reducing the risk of reinfection and promoting better healing.

2. Types of Irrigation Solutions

Several types of irrigation solutions may be used during a root canal procedure. The most commonly used solution is sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), a diluted bleach solution. Sodium hypochlorite has antimicrobial properties and effectively kills bacteria and dissolves organic matter.

Other irrigation solutions that can be used include chlorhexidine, hydrogen peroxide, and sterile saline. The specific choice of solution depends on various factors, such as the severity of the infection, patient allergies or sensitivities, and the dentist's preference for the particular case.

3. Application of Irrigation Solution

The dentist applies the irrigation solution using a syringe or an irrigating needle. The solution is delivered into the root canals through the access hole. The dentist carefully directs the solution along the canal walls, ensuring it reaches all areas and thoroughly disinfects the canals.

4. Agitation and Activation

To enhance the effectiveness of the irrigation solution, the dentist may use agitation techniques. Activation refers to the mechanical agitation of the irrigation solution within the canals to enhance its effectiveness. This can be done using ultrasonic instruments or rotary instruments designed specifically for irrigation purposes.

Activation helps improve the penetration of the irrigation solution into complex canal systems and enhances its ability to remove bacteria and debris from the canals.

Agitation helps dislodge debris, break up biofilm (a slimy layer that harbors bacteria), and improve the penetration of the solution into complex canal systems.

5. Flushing and Aspiration

After the irrigation solution has been in the canals for a designated period, it is flushed out using a sterile saline solution or water. The dentist may use a combination of gentle flushing, activation, and aspiration (suction) to remove the solution along with the dissolved debris and bacteria.

While each step in a root canal procedure is important, both irrigation and activation are essential for achieving thorough disinfection of the root canal system. They help eliminate bacteria and reduce the risk of reinfection, ultimately improving the long-term success of root canal treatment.
