What is Root Canal? (RCT)

A root canal (RCT), also known as endodontic treatment, is a dental procedure performed to treat an infected or damaged tooth's innermost layer, called the dental pulp.
The dental pulp is live and contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue.
When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated dental procedures, a root canal becomes necessary.
Purpose of Root Canal(RCT)
The purpose of a root canal (RCT) is to save the natural tooth and alleviate pain.
By removing the infected pulp and sealing the canals, the spread of infection is halted, and the tooth can be preserved.
Root canals have a high success rate and are a preferable alternative to tooth extraction, as they allow patients to retain their natural teeth and avoid the need for high-end tooth replacement options like dental implants or bridges.
Signs and Symptoms that confirm the requirement for RCT Treatment

Persistent Toothache
Severe and persistent toothache, especially when triggered by chewing or applying pressure, can indicate an infected or inflamed dental pulp.
Sensitivity to Hot and Cold
Increased sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, even after the stimulus is removed, may suggest an underlying issue in the tooth's pulp.
Prolonged Sensitivity to Sweet or Sour Foods
Lingering sensitivity to sweet or sour foods and beverages, even after they are no longer in contact with the tooth, could be a sign of pulp inflammation or infection.
Gum Swelling and Tenderness
Swelling and tenderness of the gums near the affected tooth may occur when infection or inflammation spreads beyond the tooth's pulp.
Discoloration of the Tooth
A tooth that appears significantly darker or discolored compared to the surrounding teeth may indicate a problem with the dental pulp.

Presence of Gum Abscess or Pimple
A small, pimple-like bump on the gum near the affected tooth, often referred to as a gum abscess, can be a sign of infection.

Deep Decay or Cracked Tooth
Teeth with deep cavities or fractures that reach the pulp are susceptible to infection and may require root canal treatment.
History of Trauma
Teeth that have experienced trauma, such as a strong impact or injury, may develop pulp inflammation or infection over time.

Success Rate of Root Canal(RCT)
The success rate of root canals (RCT)is generally high, with studies indicating success rates ranging from 85% to 97%.
However, it's important to note that the success of a root canal treatment can depend on various factors, including the tooth's condition, the presence of infection, the rct treatment done by a skilled dentist or not, the experience of the dentist, and the patient's oral hygiene habits.
Post-Treatment Care
Following a root canal (RCT), patients must maintain good oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups. This helps prevent the recurrence of infection and ensures the long-term success of the treatment.
However, it's important to note that root canals are not guaranteed to be successful in every case.
There can be factors that may affect the outcome, such as the complexity of the case, the presence of additional canals, the presence of curved or inaccessible canals, and individual variations in anatomy.
In some instances, the tooth may require retreatment or, in rare cases, extraction if the infection persists or complications arise.
Overall, the success rate of root canals is high, and with proper treatment and post-operative care, the majority of patients experience long-term relief from pain and maintain the treated tooth for many years.
It is advisable to consult with a qualified dentist for an accurate assessment of the success rate in your specific situation.

Cost of root canal treatment(RCT)
The cost of a root canal treatment (RCT) in can vary depending on several factors, including the location, the dentist's experience and expertise, the type and quality of material used, the high-end technology used, the tooth's complexity, and the extent of the infection or damage.
On average, In private clinics and hospitals, the cost of a single-rooted tooth (incisor or canine) root canal treatment in India can range from ₹1,000 to ₹6,000 or more. For a multi-rooted tooth (premolar or molar), the cost can range from ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 or more.
In govt hospitals, and colleges it is free or at discounted charges and comes with its own challenges.
It's important to note that the cost mentioned above is a general estimate and can vary significantly depending on the factors mentioned earlier. Additional costs may be involved if the tooth requires a dental crown or restoration after the root canal treatment.
To determine the exact cost for your specific case, it is recommended to consult with a dentist in your area. They can assess your dental condition, evaluate the complexity of the root canal treatment required, and provide you with a personalized treatment plan and cost estimate.
